  • Manage the UCSD Libraries' Metadata Services Department (MSD) computer resources, providing administrative services and technical support for over 90 networked Windows XP and 4 Linux workstations. Provide advanced user support and training for hardware and software. Assist with managing and providing technical support for the departmental website. Serve as the Department Systems Support Liaison (DSSL). Provide departmental programming support for system administration, web development, and cataloging tasks.

    (1.)  Manage Metadata Services Department computer resources

    1. Provide leadership, expertise, analysis, and advice for the management of departmental technology.
    2. Monitor and evaluate current trends in technology related to desktop and server support.
    3. Install, upgrade, and maintain three categories of workstations (laptop, desktop, and virtual machines).
    4. Research, develop specifications, purchase, build MSD workstations, and migrate user data to new environments.
    5. Research, procure, install, configure, analyze, and debug peripherals such as printers, scanners, barcode scanners, pointing devices, keyboards, PDAs, and flash drives.
    6. Install, configure and maintain Windows XP Pro and various builds of Linux.
    7. Research, procure, install, and configure software applications.
    8. Develop and maintain an infrastructure to host centralized system management tools, remotely accessible virtual machines, and a development and testing environment.
    9. Provide for system backups and maintenance of staff workstations on a regular basis, using hardware and software solutions as well as CCG as needed.
    10. Insure departmental and individual adherence to the UCSD minimum network security standards.
    11. Create, update, and deregister Ethernet registrations for MSD networked devices through ACT.
    12. Implement Cisco Virtual Private Network (VPN) for MSD employees who work remotely and provide remote support services.
    13. Install, test, and troubleshoot network equipment and cabling.
    14. Perform complex diagnostics and resolve networking, hardware, and software problems for MSD workstations.
    15. Maintain an accurate and up to date inventory of departmental hardware and software.
    16. Maintain documentation of all deployed hardware, software, configurations, licenses, and uses.

    1. Serve as the departmental resource person and provide consultative services relating to hardware, software, and other technology-related issues and questions.
    2. Provide leadership, vision, and direction for the Computer Coordinators Group, which is responsible for providing computer systems support and innovation for the Metadata Services Department.
    3. Provide instruction to end users in one-on-one and group settings on all standard departmental applications and custom hardware and software configurations.
    4. Maintain current libraries of technical end user documentation.
    5. Provide ergonomic assessments and assist users with setting up an ergonomically suitable workstation configuration. Recommend ergonomic equipment (mice, keyboards, chairs, etc.).

    1. Serve as a member of the TPOT Management Board, which is responsible for developing policies and procedures for managing, maintaining, and upgrading TPOT.
    2. Serve as the technology resource person for TPOT development and maintenance.
    3. Monitor the development of technical standards that relate to web information and technologies. Implement standards and best practices for TPOT.
    4. Work with content providers to create and/or enhance TPOT pages and web-based software applications and manage the publishing process.

    1. Participate in DSSL meetings and facilitate two-way communication between MSD and the Library IT Department (ITD).
    2. Monitor the desktop computing environment in the libraries and suggest changes to current policies and procedures.
    3. Determine and promote common skills and best practices in workstation support.
    4. Report, interpret, and implement campus and ITD policies, procedures, and best practices for MSD.

    1. Write, debug, and test scripts to perform application installation, user data migration, operating system deployment, data backup, and workstation reporting instrumentation.
    2. Design, code, debug, test, and document applications for TPOT using XML, CGI, Perl, JavaScript, HTML/XHTML, CSS, and other technologies, as appropriate.
    3. Provide consultation to the Archivists Toolkit team in quality assurance testing using MySQL, XML, XSL/XSLT and other software as needed.
    4. Provide instruction and support for MSD employees in programming scripts, macros, and other methods to automate cataloging and data manipulation tasks.
